When the Student is Ready, the Teacher Appears – David Malmberg Studies Classical Guitar

I am often asked about the experience of studying the classical guitar in Spain.  To put it bluntly, it was one of those peak experiences that one carries through the whole of life.

It was at a time when Spain had yet to emerge as the vibrant culture it is today.  In other words, it was time when history was truly being made.  Though it was the 20th century, in many respects, the old ways of Spain were still very much alive.  Farmers were still plowing fields with mules; there were no freeways, and no franchises ala America.

It was in this environment that I walked through the 16th century doors of the Conservatorio Superior de la Musica, in Seville.  And it was there that I was accepted as a student by Dona America Martinez Serrano, the first woman to hold a Doctorate Chair at a Spanish University.  The acceptance was with the provision that I practice 5 hours a day with an intense schedule of private tutoring on the classical guitar.

I was 21 years old and full of ambition.

Years later, visiting with America Martinez, I asked her why she took me on as a student.  Her reply was:  “I could see the fire in your eyes.”

When I look back all these years later I see the gift she gave.  The gift is one that has lasted a lifetime and given me immeasurable satisfaction.  It was the woodshed period of my life as far as music and the guitar was concerned.  But, of course, through the years, I have dabbled in many different types of music, composed numerous compositions for the classical guitar and became a teacher of the instrument myself.  It is curious how one’s own legacy evolves without any conscious effort!

But, it all started in Spain.  A 21 year old, with a guitar, lots of ambition and a teacher, who no doubt appeared when the student was ready.

We’re so glad this opportunity was available to you, David.  The lives of all who hear your music are much richer for your experience!
