Sean Emery is electric. Constantly emerging as an artist after over 20 years in show business, he deftly takes a familiar shtick and transforms it into something turbocharged and refreshingly wonderful. A true original, Sean Emery’s performances showcase his sparkling wit and broad antics such as when the rubbery-faced comedian peels himself off the floor after a face-flat fall from a unicycle. No one works a crowd like Sean. His infectious personality will infuse your event with laughter and bring smiles to all ages. He is a top fair & festival performer, performing in more fair & festivals than nearly any performer in the region.

Biography:

Sean Emery was born in Derry, North Ireland in 1958, the son of an Irish mother and South Carolina-born father who met and wed while Sean’s father was stationed at the Londonderry Naval Submarine Base. The Emery family made their home all over the world, with a three-year stint in Athens being its longest stay. Understandably, young Sean developed a gypsy spirit.

After his father’s retirement from the Navy, when Sean was in fourth grade, the family took root in Charlotte, North Carolina. In high school he excelled in football as a linebacker and team co-captain, earning “Most Valuable Player Award” in the ninth grade and Honorable Mention as a linebacker on the All County Team as a senior in high school. Unlike his peers who dreamed of getting a college football scholarship or going pro, Sean used the confidence and determination he got from football to fulfill his dream of joining the circus.

Despite pursuit of a commercial art major in college, Sean knew that his career would take a different direction. He liked acting, but it was a role as the street performer in Pygmalion that led to clowning and juggling as a vocation. In 1979, he left his academic studies for Clown College with Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Baileys Circus. It was the right move: he became one of the few accepted to join Ringling Brothers after Clown College graduation, and was a clown on the Red Unit for three years (1980-1982). The time spent performing in arenas with seasoned professionals and traveling the country by circus train set the tone for his current life and career.

He met his wife Meg – also with Ringling Brothers – in 1980. The showgirl/aerialist and juggler/clown have been married for twenty years, and are proud that daughter Aerial is following in their footsteps with her hula-hoop act.

After the circus Sean left his clown make-up behind, moving to New York City to work as a street performer and honing his skills as an all-around performer. Interesting work followed, including the MTV Awards at Radio City Music Hall, corporate gigs, theaters, and cabarets. Frequent performances on major cruise lines afforded him the opportunity to travel to over twenty-five countries. He entertained in Japan three times and once at the White House. In the past, Sean has worked with acts such as the Temptations, Jerry Lewis, and Hanson, and has also appeared in television commercials. He landed a guest bit on the popular soap opera Search for Tomorrow.

Currently Sean presents his act at corporate events and state fairs, using the occasional theater show to round out his tour schedule. Along with his wife Meg, he teaches circus arts for the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training Program and the Theater Arts Department. He also teaches at Meg’s “Xelias Aerial Arts Studio.”

Sean takes pleasure in picking and singing bluegrass with his mandolin, backpacking for days and having campfires with his family. He also enjoys painting in his studio and working on the family home.

What people are saying:

”Sean was great – he interacted so well with the crowd, included our presentation within his jokes, etc., not to mention his amazing physical talents! We truly appreciate Sean’s time, and I thank you for your time as well! “
–Schwartz Farms

“He was wonderful. He sent the nicest thank you note! He was very, very personable and a perfect fit for our crowd! Everyone absolutely loved him. He was so nice. He stuck around for a while afterwards and was able to socialize with people and everyone really loved getting the chance to talk to him. You can use me as a reference anytime.”
–Albertville Lioness Club

“Sean did a fantastic job. I thought our entertainment last year was good and would be a hard “act” to follow. Sean, however, proved that wrong. I had lots of people go out of their way to tell me how much they enjoyed Sean!”
–Lake Region Healthcare

“I just had to drop a quick note to tell you of the many wonderful comments I have received from co-workers on your performance at our company party…They all thoroughly enjoyed it…Thanks again for the pats on the back I’m receiving for booking your show.”
–Meeker Cooperative

Technical rider:

In order to give you the best performance possible, Sean Emery provides the following information as a technical rider to his contract:

A dressing room needs to be provided for Artist’s use at the entertainment venue. This excludes public restrooms and storage rooms. If a dressing room is not available on site, then a hotel room needs to be provided and pre-paid by purchaser for Artist to use as a dressing room as close to the performing venue as possible. This is necessary to provide Artist a place to change into costume, stretch, warm-up, and prepare for the performance.

Minimum stage size is 10′ x 10′.

Minimum stage to ceiling height is 10′.

Sean can work with stage and ceiling restrictions; however, the noted minimum sizes allow Sean to do his complete show.

What do you like best about being a performer?

“The best part of entertaining is the wide variety of people I get to meet. From farmers and construction workers to doctors, scientists, and salespeople, they all have unique personalities and perspectives on life. They all think what I do for a living is pretty cool, and most of the time, it is! At least that’s what I tell myself as I’m waiting in an airport or halfway home from Pierre in a snowstorm, or calming the butterflies in my stomach 5 minutes before I take the stage! But when he show is over, it’s all worth it, and I start getting ready for the next show…wherever THAT is!”

Any Hobbies?

Tae Kwon Do, songwriting and recording in my studio, occasional golf and fishing.

What makes your show unique?

“My show is unique because I bring an audience through such a wide range of emotions and perform such a variety of ways. From the animated, theatrical performances of my original songs, to interacting WITH the audience IN the audience… from hitting hollow golf balls into the audience to bringing people on stage to be a “Rock Star”…from telling the story of “The Finn Who Would Not Take A Sauna” to the hilarious, original choral hymn “And The Fishing Hook Stuck In His Butt”…my show is multi-dimensional and has something that everyone can appreciate.”

What people are saying:

“…He was funny, talented and thoroughly entertaining. There were so many of our attendees wanting to visit with him after his performance, it was like he had groupies. We will definitely use your company again and recommend you to others.”
–National League of Postmasters

“Our two Christmas parties went great – we were so pleased with Glen. He was professional and great to work with and very funny too. I’ve heard only positive comments about the performance and we had one client say he was ‘our best program ever’. He is very talented and it’s obvious he loves what he’s doing. Thank you for recommending him – he exceeded our expectations.”
–Bankwest

“You were the perfect fit for the last night of our convention! Everybody had an AWESOME time. We definitely needed to let loose and we did! A BIG THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DID!”
–3M Pharmaceuticals

“Just wanted to say Thank You again for the wonderful entertainment you provided for us Saturday night. Everyone is raving about you today stating how funny and talented you are. Many compliments stating the best party we’ve had so far! Thanks Again!!”
–Mastercraft Industries

Technical rider:

In order to give you the best performance possible, Glen provides the following information as a technical rider to his contract:

Stage Requirements – A raised 12’ x 12’ stage is the perfect size for the show.

Electrical Outlets - I can run all my P.A. and lights on 110 volt outlets

Dressing Area – I need a secure, private area to change into my stage wardrobe and store my street clothes during my performance.

Performance Suggestions - There are a few things you can do to ensure that my performance is enjoyed by all:

If possible, ask the wait staff to clear the table dishes after the performance is finished. Nothing is more distracting to your guests than rattling plates and a busy catering staff blocking their view.

If is an after-dinner show, it seems to work best to keep things moving along and have everything all set prior to dinner so I can be quickly introduced and can jump into my show without any long delays.

If the show is in a long, rectangular room, try to position the stage so people have the best viewing angle. Usually putting the stage on a side wall instead of at a far end works best.

If I can have water and/or soda available during set-up and for the show as it is helpful to my voice.

All these items are important ingredients to a successful performance and, ultimately, an enjoyable event. Please help by implementing these simple tips. Thanks for choosing Glen Everhart, and I look forward to meeting you in person.

The group is founded by jazz pianist George Maurer. The GMG can go out in many formats from a jazz trio, to a four piece, to a five piece, to a full big band that provides the types of music and entertainment you need, whether it be background or full dancing sets. Sometimes jazz music just gives the event the right kind of feel, the right kind of class, to make it really special, and the GMG can bring that style of music to your event.

“Dress smart, act casual, look like you know what you are doing, and wait for somebody to count to four” is one humorous take on the George Maurer Group’s approach to having fun on stage. Just as varied as the great music they perform are the personalities of the musicians who perform it. It is that fun “family” style of relating…to each other, to the audience, to their instruments, that makes up a GMG experience.

A common love of jazz for the sake of playing jazz is the main motivator behind these “genre bending eclectictites” (Jazz 88 FM, Minneapolis). They are a gathering of the best of friends and the rarest of professionals, and their individual creativity and artistry continually pushes so-called “limits”. Other entertainers have noticed; individually or collectively, GMG members have performed Carnegie Hall, The Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Fitzgerald, Ordway & the Dakota, for members of Congress and the White House, and have performed with Eric Clapton, Dick Clark, The Crickets to Bob Hope and many, many more.

But don’t remind them of such accomplishments, as they might start looking like they do know what they are doing, start to dress funny, or start without each other……

Led by pianist/composer George Maurer, the George Maurer Group performs traditional jazz to swing, blues to bebop, and a healthy dose of originals. They are “one of the preeminent small jazz groups on the scene. Recommended.” (David Nathan, All About Jazz). Come tap your toes to the “irreverent style and sly musical humor” (the Dakota Jazz Club, Minneapolis) of the George Maurer Group, a gathering of several well dressed friends who play jazz the way it was meant to be — by the seat of their pants.

Fast Facts About the George Maurer Group:

Press:

“With the release, On Track, the George Maurer Group continues its march to becoming one of the preeminent small jazz groups on the scene. Recommended.” Dave Nathan, critic for All About Jazz

“This was fun. It’s impossible to sit still and to NOT smile when you observe the “teamwork” that propels jazz musicians as they pass off the lead to celebrate one another’s individual talent.” Steve Waller, Lake Country Journal

Personnel:

George Maurer, piano

Muggsy Lauer, guitar, vocals

Jeff Engholm, bass, vocals

Scott Chabot, drums

Richard Witteman, trumpet, vocals

Band Bios

What do they do when they aren’t playing jazz? Well…George Maurer credits his parents’ act of rescuing an old upright piano from a barn as his earliest intimate experience with a piano. The instrument had been misused to seduce chickens and cows. Thus the attraction.

That piano is now being restored by George Maurer, “Minnesota’s premiere jazz pianist” (KARE-11 TV, Minneapolis). “Maurer has a feel for his instrument that makes for an immediate emotional response…” (Minneapolis Star Tribune). He makes his music close to his heart, and his fans have been making it a part of their lives ever since his solo debut, Behind the Pine Curtain (Pine Curtain Records) in 1986.

George Maurer has performed nationwide as a solo performer- from the Ordway Theater in St. Paul, MN, to performances in Washington, D.C. for members of Congress, the United Nations, and the White House. He’s compiled a discography of 15 innovative solo piano and jazz albums, and his gentle humor and storytelling abilities, woven with original music, have garnered him several nominations for “Jazz Entertainer of the Year” nationwide on college campuses.

Maurer joined the Twin Cities’ Wesley Balk Summer Institute in 2002 as an Associate Music Director and participant, and has spent numerous summers and falls music directing and arranging for community theaters in Central Minnesota, as well as music directing and scoring for several Rough Cuts (Nautilus) showcases. In the Twin Cities, he has scored original music for Ms. Julie (10,000 Things), So This Duck Walks Into A Psychiatrist’s Office (Rough Cuts, Nautilus) and has scored and produced or performed for audio-books by noted Minnesota authors, including Jon Hassler (Staggerford, Rookery Blues) and Doug Wood (Old Turtle).

Recently, Maurer has performed with Eric Clapton at the House of Blues, Los Angeles; with Dick Clark, Bobby Vee, the Chiffons, the Crystals, Fabian, and Buddy Holly’s original band The Crickets, and with numerous other rock and jazz performers. Armed with an uncanny ability to interpret, arrange for, and produce and perform numerous musical styles; from traditional jazz to bebop, classic to modern rock, to country and beyond, Maurer is called upon often to be a hired gun for numerous recording and theatrical ventures.

When George isn’t performing solo, he arranges for and music directs the George Maurer Jazz Group, a “rambunctious” (The City Pages/Minneapolis), irreverent gathering of nine jazz musicians, “one of Central Minnesota’s sparkling contributions to the arts.” (Dale Connelly/Jim Ed Poole/ MPR’s The Morning Program).

These “genre-bending eclectites” (Jazz 88 FM), are known for their “irreverent style and sly musical humor” (the Dakota Bar & Grill, Minneapolis). They hail from various locales from the outer backwashes of Central Minnesota, and their musical style is touted as “jazz beyond suburbia…..then way out.” (Leigh Kamman, The Jazz Image, MPR). They bend tradition whenever they can, even as live performers, and are featured regularly on Minneapolis’ KARE-11 TV’s Saturday Morning Program, and MPR’s Morning Program. See www.gmjazz.com.

Jeff Engholm (bass) wears many hats as a bassist, singer, songwriter, engineer, conductor, and producer. Primarily a bass player, he works mostly for the George Maurer Jazz Group. Jeff also plays in Blimp, a Led Zeppelin tribute band, and is a singer/songwriter in the Collective Unconscious. He recently returned from Bobby Vee’s “Up North December” tour as a singer, guitarist and bassist. Jeff is also a recording engineer at Rockhouse Studios in St Joseph, MN, and has engineered and helped produce the last four George Maurer albums, including the recently released “Groovitis” from the George Maurer Trio, two Collective Unconscious CD’s, the soon to be released Dennis Warner 20th Anniversary Concert, and an upcoming DVD from the “Big Wu” Family Reunion, to name a few. As an independent producer, Jeff has put together productions of “Carmina Burana”, “African Sanctus”, and the Beatles album “Abbey Road”. Jeff arranged and conducted a 24 piece ensemble production of the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” which sold out to concert halls from St. Cloud to Zumbrota, MN recently. Links to all of this information, and other stuff can be found at www.hunnynutstudios.com, Jeff’s home base.

Muggsy Lauer (guitar & vocals) has been playing guitar since age 12 when he started learning John Denver songs out of a songbook. His love of jazz developed in high school, and he spent 17 years doing a weekly jazz radio show on KVSC-FM. Muggsy started singing jazz in the George Maurer Jazz Group and marks it as one of his most favorite contributions to the band. Muggsy is also a member of Collective Unconscious. When not playing and singing jazz he is the Roast Master at the Meeting Grounds Coffee Company in St. Joseph, MN.

Richard Witteman (trumpet) sings with the Half Steps a cappella group and works for Bankers Systems, St. Cloud, MN.

Scott Chabot (drums) is still working on his new house and will drum for food basically anywhere.

“…I want to sincerely thank you for the music at Sarah’s and Alex’s wedding…From the moment you started playing on the deck, you and your group provided a focus and a first class music experience that set the tone for the entire evening. From our two-year-old granddaughter to the five grandparents in their late 80’s, no one wanted you to stop playing–even at 12:30 a.m. Each of your musicians is a true professional and you are simply dynamite. I thank you and wish I had a few more kids because I want to keep listening and dancing…Thank you again and again – the wedding would not have been so great without your music!”

Stage size needed: minimum 12×16

Electricity: normal household current

Sample introduction:

The following is a sample introduction you might use when introducing the George Maurer Group to your audience:

“Dress smart, act casual, look like you know what you are doing, and wait for somebody to count to four” is one humorous take on the George Maurer Group’s approach to having fun on stage. A common love of jazz for the sake of playing jazz is the main motivator behind these “genre bending eclectictites” (Jazz 88 FM, Minneapolis).

‘They perform just about the hippest version of the Charlie Brown theme song Linus and Lucy on the planet- if the audience promises to Snoopy Dance. Members of the George Maurer Group have performed Carnegie Hall, The Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Fitzgerald, Ordway & the Dakota, for members of Congress and the White House, and with Eric Clapton, Dick Clark, The Crickets to Bob Hope and many, many more.

‘From the Beatles to bebop, Gershwin to Led Zepplin, swing to Bob Marley, and beyond, there is no musical style not left untouched by The George Maurer Group, a gathering of several well dressed friends who play jazz the way it was meant to be — by the seat of their pants.”
