"Keep On Rising Up"
George uses his gifts as a musical composer and pianist to underscore the stories of his epic solo bike rides in an inspirational, engaging presentation about the transformative power of taking on challenges. When George embarked on his first cross-country bicycle trek to raise money for cancer research, he found himself on more than just a physical journey. George uses his now annual rides as a guide to bring audiences along on his personal journey of finding his inner strength as he pedals mile after mile to achieve his dream. Presentations are normally 60 – 75 minutes long but can be tailored to length at client’s request. All presentations include videos, photos, music, audience participation and question and answer (Q/A optional.) Presentation is geared for all ages, group sizes and any organizations looking for a speaker who can propel them to set goals, push past their boundaries and show themselves how far they can go.
George Maurer has a successful music career that includes work with everyone from the Minnesota Orchestra to the original cast of the Tony-awarded cast of Broadway’s “Jersey Boys.” However, he also has an inner voice that pushes him to test himself in new ways. In summer 2014 he answered an inner challenge and put his music career on hold to bike across the country, solo, and benefit an important cause. It was the start of a journey without an end. George wanted to honor a late friend and raise money for cancer research in her name while pushing his personal limits. He didn’t have to look far for inspiration. His friend had ridden her bike across America in 48 days to benefit a cause important to her. He decided ride in her tracks. George set an initial goal of raising $10,000 for the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and, after much training and planning, set off on his “48 Across the 48: The Carolyn Held Memorial Bike Ride” bike ride. Forty-eight days, 3,600 miles and 10 flat tires later, he finished his journey from Seattle to Boston – and raised $21,000 for the Mayo. George now knows that no challenge is insurmountable. He wants to share his experience with others so they, too, can feel the pride of achieving their dreams, the exhilaration of success and the gratitude for everyone who helps make it happen. George took a leap of faith by putting his music career on hold while he pursued his goal. He put faith in his own strength no matter how hard it was tested and relied on the generosity of friends and even strangers to house him along his route and help him more than double his fund-raising goals. He thought it would be a once-in-a-lifetime journey, but he’s not about to stop now. The 2015 Carolyn Held Memorial Bike Ride is in the works, with more to follow. His rides will continue to benefit the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center because, as he points out, we’ve all lost someone we love to cancer, and we need to keep supporting scientists looking for a cure. The Benedictine monks at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, MN, where George graduated in 1988, taught him to listen with the ear of the heart. This philosophy has guided him throughout his career as he wrote and produced his own music and arranged and produced for performers across the country. It also guided him as he embarked on his amazing ride across the country, which he documented with video, photos, Facebook posts, and blogs. George’s presentation lets his audience join him on his journey and, in the process, begin a personal journey of their own.
“George’s presentation kept the St John’s Prep kids in rapt attention. His stories, paired with the great videos he produced along his journey made for a very engaging and REAL experience for these kids. Before their eyes, they watched George tell them about something that they previously considered impossible, and left the room feeling like they could accomplish ANYTHING. They had lots of great questions at the end, and we ran out of time trying to answer them all! Inspiring, humorous and fun, it was an incredible afternoon of stories and pictures not quite like anything else we’ve ever seen.” –Saint John’s Preparatory School, Collegeville, MN
