Leagues, Tournaments, and Other Events Underhanded Events - Dartball Leagues, Tournaments, and Other Events Download Media Kit [object Object] In 1923, The Apex Dart Company invented a new board made of basswood and emblazoned with a general likeness of a baseball field and created a new game called ‘Dartball.’ From there, it took several years to gather steam, but the first known Dartball league came to be in a Pennsylvania Lutheran church basement 5 years later. Over the next several decades, the game slowly spread around the Upper Midwest and Rust Belt, particularly catching on in Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and Kansas City. By the 1950s, it had held a following in Pennsylvania and Ohio, but truly had a cultural grip in church basements and clubs throughout Wisconsin where it is still popular today. This is where the story of Underhanded Events begins. In the late 1940s at a Catholic Church named St. Willebrord’s in Green Bay, WI, a group of parishioners got together weekly for games while their spouses played cards. A piece of Americana almost too cliché for Norman Rockwell to memorialize. St. Willy’s was a formidable team with an ace up their sleeve- Hank Eisch. Hank was a renowned triples-hitter with multiple league ‘batting titles’ spanning the 50s, 60s and 70s. He was something of a legend in the local Dartball scene (which yes, it was and is a scene). Three generations later, his great grandson, Nate Berg, and his dad, Gary, caught the Dartball bug. Not literally of course, as no one wanted to get ‘the bug’ in 2020! They wanted to revive the game that has been mostly lost or is still unknown outside of Wisconsin and bring the old family tradition, and great socializing and team building event to Minnesota and beyond. Combining many of Gary and Nate’s favorite things: sports, tradition, laughing, and most importantly, sharing a great time with groups of people, Underhanded Events was officially founded in 2021 as a labor of love to help get people back together and have fun and get out of the isolated rut that the pandemic created. The game is best described in our video. It is played like a baseball/softball game and it is accessible and fun for all adults no matter what their athletic skills. Encouraged by his family, Kris began playing the drums and later took up the piano. Once out of high school, Kris began playing with “Double Shot”, and later the “Plum Krazy” band. At the age of 29, Kris began playing the concertina, an instrument Kris always appreciated and enjoyed. Practicing several hours a day, Kris became proficient at the concertina and formed the Riverbend Dutchmen after playing the concertina for only 2 years. Kris now plays the concertina exclusively in addition to singing with his own band. The Riverbend Dutchmen typically perform as a 5 or 6 piece band, but often perform as a 7 or 8 piece band for larger venues. This at a time when many of the larger bands are disappearing in favor of three or four piece bands. “I’ve always appreciated the versatility of a robust horn section”, says Kris. Other band members include Crystal Malek on drums, Mike Budin on tuba, Rick Keane, Myron Muehlbauer, Jens Jensen, Jerry Kahle, and Steve Moran rounding out the horn section. The late Dick Ginn, former host of the KEYC-TV Bandwagon program also played with the band until succumbing to cancer in April of 2013. “I’ve always been fortunate to have been surrounded by such talented musicians and mentors”, said Kris in a recent newspaper interview. The band’s schedule continues to get busier every year as the band becomes more and more popular. “Old time music is certainly not dead. It is good music and people continue to enjoy themselves”, says Kris while explaining the bands success and growing popularity. The band has been busy in the last couple years with performances that included numerous festivals across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The band has made multiple appearances at the Minnesota State Fair and Clay County Iowa Fair in addition to many community celebrations and festivals. He attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN where he double-majored in Theatre/Speech and English. He taught Junior High English, was Theatre Director at Dassel-Cokato High School for two years, and has headlined for over 300 comedy clubs including The Comedy Store in LA, Funny Bones, and Sarasota Comedy Club. Scott has written for HBO, Dudley Rigg’s Brave New Workshop, TV commercials, two children’s plays, Strange Brew daily comic strip, and Saturday Night Live. He has appeared on MTV’s Half Hour Comedy Hour, TV commercials including Best Buy, Lava Soap, Coors Beer, and Land O’ Lakes, and America’s Funniest People. Scott owned and operated The Comedy Cabaret, Minnesota’s first stand-up/variety comedy club and released a comedy CD entitled Monu-Mental in 2005. Scott teaches classes in stand-up comedy and improvisation and is currently working on a motivational speech as well as working on teaching a class in Comedy Therapy. He loves teaching new students the art of comedy and improvisation, and lives by the Greek definition of comedy, which is “life with hope”. One of his favorite gigs has been performing twice so far at Medora, ND at the huge outdoor musical as one of the featured entertainers.
