He remembers clearly the first time he saw a ventriloquist on TV and felt the first surge of desire to learn the art. By the time he was 13, David was practicing voice throwing in the classroom much to the chagrin of his teachers! His parents eventually felt he had potential and purchased for him a professional ventriloquist figure when he was 15. According to David: "It was in those early years that I discovered the exhilaration of live performance." Later, he went off to serve his country in the United States Navy, continuing his voice throwing antics in boot camp. This eventually caught the attention of his superiors and he was assigned as a DJ to radio stations in the American Forces Radio network in Cuba and Spain. This gave David a platform to continue practicing his craft. Opportunities also arose for him to pursue his academic ambitions. His undergraduate work was in broadcast journalism, and he also holds a Master's degree in Music and a PhD in Philosophy. After serving his country, David returned to the United States. He thought: "I should get a real job." So he entered the broadcasting business. This began a 20 year successful run as the Operations Director of radio stations K102 and WDGY in Minneapolis. David received many industry awards during this time including being named one of the "Top Ten Program Directors" in America by trade magazine "Inside Radio." Eventually though, the desire to experience live performance resulted in David stepping down from his post in the broadcasting business to pursue a career as an entertainer. David said, "They all thought I was crazy. You know, don't give up your day job sort of thing." Well, crazy or not, David has been crisscrossing the country with his show that features ventriloquism and music. David estimates that he has performed in front of more than a million people in his career. When asked about what drives him, David said, "Well, if you're lucky, you find out your passion in life. A platform or riser is sufficient; however it should be a minimum of 8 x 12 feet. The stage should also be centered in front of the audience no further than 15-20 feet away from the audience. Please provide a private dressing room. Unless absolutely necessary, no public restrooms please. In cases where Mr. Malmberg is staying at a hotel where your event takes place, the hotel room will work. Performer will provide sound and lights unless other arrangements have been made. X 20 ft. is ideal for the performance (although, larger is always better!) Duelly Noted offers an interactive show and audience members are invited on stage to participate during the performance. The absolute minimum space required is 12 ft. X 12 ft. The stage should be set as close to the audience as possible with care taken to keep seating in front of the stage as much as possible. Having a secure and private room (dressing room) near the performance area is extremely helpful to store personal belongings, etc. Artist provides their own sound and lights for most settings. An auditorium stage or an extremely STABLE riser (riser being as large as possible) to accommodate 20 chairs in a semicircle. RISER MUST BE FLUSH AGAINST A WALL FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PARTICIPANTS. Purchaser shall also arrange audience seating so that the front row chairs begin approximately six feet from the stage unless show is performed in an auditorium or gymnasium. An EXCELLENT sound system that provides outstanding sound on the STAGE AREA. THIS IS CRITICAL. Audience response drowns out most verbal communication between the hypnotist and the subjects. Please do not assume that the sound system is strong enough to overpower hundreds of people laughing. Volunteers must hear the hypnotist CLEARLY. Thus, SPEAKER MONITORS ON STAGE WHICH FACE THE VOLUNTEERS ARE A MUST. If your auditorium is not fitted for monitor hook-ups, please be inventive. Almost always, a portable system with large speakers placed BEHIND the volunteers (facing the audience) can out power in-house systems. They also double as EXCELLENT monitors. TWO microphones are to be provided (a handheld cordless with a spare battery is great if available) making sure the cords are long enough, able to reach all chairs on stage easily. The second microphone will be used as a back up. However, the XLR or cable to the amplifier will be used as a second input for background music and special effects. Good stage lighting is important. Most auditoriums have acceptable lighting but please ensure the lights are properly aimed (and not burned out) to flood approximately the first 20 feet of the stage area. If the show is located where built-in lighting is not available, any additional lighting to augment the stage area is STRONGLY suggested. This will increase response of volunteers and provide for a much better show.
